How Did The UK Smash Its Solar Targets Despite The Weather? System

There is a huge wave of optimism in the world of solar power, to the point that 2024 feels like the Year Of Solar, as solar panel installers are busier than ever and many countries are generating so much clean energy they do not know what to do with it.

The world leader in this regard is China, who managed to demolish their solar and wind capacity targets six years earlier than expected, but many other countries are following, most notably Germany and the United Kingdom.

Germany has removed many restrictions to their installation and seen a green energy boom so great that energy prices at one point reached negative numbers.

The United Kingdom are relatively late with what Energy Secretary Ed Miliband has dubbed a “rooftop revolution” but despite this relatively late push and somewhat inclement weather over the summer months, the UK has been on track to break records for stellar power generation.

According to an ICIS forecast commissioned by The Guardian Newspaper, stellar power generation is expected to be up to 25 per cent higher compared with the previous year before many of the energy policies and strategies have been fully put into force.

Most notably, the 5.86 terawatt-hours of electricity generated between June and August is 16 per cent higher than the biggest year in history for British stellar, which means a tremendous amount more than the numbers may suggest.

Throughout 2022, there was a major global energy crisis, but its epicentre was in Europe as a result of economic sanctions, trade embargoes and military conflicts that revealed just how vulnerable and insecure the energy infrastructure of many countries in the world truly was.

As a result of this, many nations pivoted to wind, hydroelectric and stellar power, but whilst the former two are relatively mature technologies with capabilities that are largely understood, solar has been constantly improving, refining and getting cheaper over the past century.

Solar panels have gotten exceptionally efficient, to the point that, despite conventional wisdom, most modern panels can generate power on cloudy days, and can in some cases be more efficient on cooler days due to overheating issues.

This means that, whilst the prevailing belief was that Britain was too rainy a country to go solar, this is simply not the case and far more of the nation’s power needs can be met through both individual and high-scale solar generation.

The former is the literal “rooftop revolution”, which makes it easier to install solar panels by loosening the somewhat-complex planning restrictions on certain types of panels, as well as effectively requiring them to be installed on new-build buildings.

Within two months, three major stellar farms have been approved as well, most notably in the South of England which has historically lagged behind the North in terms of solar power generation, despite geographically having conditions highly amenable to stellar.

The ultimate aim is for the UK to triple its stellar capacity by 2030, which alongside doubling onshore and quadrupling offshore wind farms, will help to significantly reduce reliance on fossil fuels in favour of greener renewables.
